My Favorite News Sources

Last time, I gave some advice on how to find credible news sources. Continuing on from that, I’d like to share my personal favorite news sources, as of 2024.

The Christian Science Monitor

The Christian Science Monitor is one of my favorite news sources. They go out of their way to cover things in a fair manner, digging deep into asking why people take the stances they do. It’s coverage through a lens of values that keeps the humanity in perspective.

And don’t be mislead by the name. While it was founded by the same woman who founded The Church of Christ, Scientist, it’s hardly any sort of religious mouthpiece. The coverage comes from diverse perspectives and is respectful of numerous faiths.

Africanews

Africa is a continent with a lot going on and a lot to contribute to the world. But in global news, comparatively little attention is often given to the view from Africa. Africanews provides a different view from the common Western-centric narratives seen elsewhere.

The Hindu

The Hindu is another good place for getting a different perspective. Things that look vitally important to us might look trivial from within India, and vice-versa. It’s good to get a reality check.

Also, I have to confess, I have a bizarre fascination with the twists and turns of domestic Indian politics, despite never having even set foot there. Yes, I’m weird like that.

Local News

Looking around the world is important, but so is looking at our own communities and neighborhoods. Local news is vital for that. For us Lincolnites, that would be 1011 Now and The Lincoln Journal Star.

They’re also not a bad place to get regional and national news, usually via news agencies like the Associated Press. And even at the local level, it’s fascinating to see how much relative weight each chooses to give stories.

Anyway, these are the places I currently go. So far, they’ve served me reasonably well. Perhaps in 2025 I’ll have new sources I turn to.
