This was a fun, lightweight read. I found the authors’ snarky tone rather endearing. I also like the way, unlike most survival skill books, this one includes crazy scenarios like getting attacked by a hoard of chipmunks, or being on a runaway train.
The book is clearly meant to be humorous, and not a serious training resource in survival. It includes a fair amount of standard topics like improvising tools in the wild, making shelter, dealing with quicksand, and the like.
Unfortunately, the book is very sparing with illustrations and diagrams. Most of these topics would have been well served with detailed pictures and photographs. At best, you get maybe one simplistic illustrated figure. So, the book has very little practical value. That said, it is entertaining.
Maybe the most interesting part of it is the recurring topic, “True Tales of Weird Survival”. In each of these, it recounts a tale of a real person who survived some extremely dangerous circumstances. I found them somewhat inspirational. It’s amazing what people can survive when they don’t give up (and have no small amount of good fortune).
